the city

Athens is one of the worlds cities and considered the birthplace of democracy. It is the home of two UNESCO World Heritage sites, the iconic Acropolis of Athens and the medieval Daphni Monastery. The city is steeped in history, with its recorded history spanning 3,400 years. It was the home to Plato's Academy and Aristotle's Lyceum, which made significant and lasting impacts on Western civilization. In modern times, Athens is known as a center of culture, business, shipping and maritime activity. There are countless landmarks that most people have heard about in stories since their childhood.

THE EXCURSION and logistics

For Trekrs arriving in Athens on the Friday night before we sail, we are organizing hotel rooms for the group and a tour of Athens during the day on Saturday while the yachts are being prepared. The hotel will be near the marina and provide comfortable, convenient and economical accommodations. We will have a bus meet us at the hotel on Saturday morning. Our first stop will be at the marina to drop off our luggage and check in for the sail. From there, we will depart for the sites of the city for the day, have lunch and return to the city in time to board the yachts.

Check-in for the hotel is at 12:00 Noon on Friday. We will organize a group dinner and drinks for those interested. On Saturday morning, you will have time for a leisurely breakfast. Then, the group will check out of the hotel and a motor coach will take everyone to drop off luggage at the marina before embarking on a tour of the major sites of Athens with some stops for wine along the way. We will return to the marina in the afternoon for a champagne toast and to board the yachts!

The Island

Santorini is a stunningly beautiful island 120 miles southeast of mainland Greece in the Aegean Sea. The southernmost member of the Cyclades group of islands, it was formed by one of the largest volcanic eruptions in history. While a resulting tsunami may have led to the destruction of the Minoan civilization on the island of Crete, it left behind a volcanic caldera that is heralded as one of the most beautiful places in the world.

the excursion

Given the distance of Santorini from mainland Greece, it is difficult to reach during the one week sailing trip. Accordingly, Trekr is offering an excursion to Santorini following your sailing trip. It is such a beautiful destination, we did not want Trekrs to be in the area and miss out. We are arranging transportation to and from the island by ferry and two nights of accommodations with beautiful views of the caldera. Santorini offers a wide range of options to fill your days: wine tastings, archaeologic tours, promenades with beautiful views, cafes with delicious food and wine, multiple beaches with varying unique colors of sand, sunsets that elicit literal applause from the assembled crowds and much more. Trekrs are free to relax or explore as much as they would like. Team Trekr will be on hand with plenty of suggestions!

the logistics

After returning to Zea Marina in Athens on Friday evening, we will depart the yachts bright and early on Saturday for a 7:00am ferry to Santorini. The approximately 5 hour trip will get us there in time for hotel check-in, a late lunch, and plenty of time to explore before enjoying the soul touching sunset. We will be staying in the Oia area of Santorini on Saturday and Sunday nights in apartments that are bright and airy, with patios and expansive views of the Aegean Sea. On Monday, we will return to Athens on a 12:15pm ferry for an approximately 5 hour voyage to Athens to end the trip. If you are unable to schedule a flight out of Athens the evening we return from Santorini, Trekr will provide a room for you Monday night so you can catch a flight sometime on Tuesday.
